Reader request: My nail polish storage

Edit: See my updated nail polish storage from October 2010 here.

When I posted about my awesome swaps recently, Nur from Nur KissKat commented that I had a number of polishes and requested I do a post about how I store them. I love reading how others store their polishes (I love storage options haha) and was intending to do one but never got around to it so here goes. Thanks for the request Nur!

I actually don't have many polishes - especially compared to the hardcore nail bloggers - but I have WAAAAY more than I ever intended to accumulate! I'm an addict now haha. My family and I are currently renovating our house and are in rental accommodation at the moment, so this is my very temporary setup for all my nail bits and bobs until I move home and can set up a more permanent solution. I'd love to get a Helmer but we'll see.

My nail area:

Top shelf:

Nail storage box, nail art storage box, nail plate books and manicure essentials.

Bottom shelf:

Nail storage boxes, nail polish removers and other nail bits and pieces.

Nail polish storage:

I currently use these clear Homemaker storage boxes which I got from Kmart for only $6. They come with a clip on lid which makes transporting them easy and they are stackable which is fantastic. It also keeps your polishes dust free too and hold up to 45 China Glaze/OPI/Orly polishes or more if the bottles are smaller. I have 3 of these currently but I need another one to store my new swap polishes and others lying around without a home!

* I forgot to mention the dimensions of the containers as they come in many different sizes. This is the 7L container which is 33cm(w) x 22.5cm (d) x 15cm(h) if you're looking for them =)

China Glaze and OPI polishes:

Looking a bit empty because I'm lending to girls at work =p

Color Club, Orly, Essie, Nubar etc.

Miscellaneous polishes - Ulta 3, BYS, Sinful Colors and my lovely European lacquers.

My nail art box:

I love this storage box. I bought it at Riot Art and Craft a few months back (see my post here) and now use it to store all nail art stuff. It comes with 2 layers - the first is divided into little compartments in which I store nail dividers, droppers for Seche Restore and OPI Drip Dry, extra Konad stampers and scrapers, nail glue and blade for cutting fimo clay.
The bottom compartment I use to store all the polishes I use for Konading, striping polishes, nail stickers, rhinestones and fimo clay.

My nail plate storage:

I've been trying to find a way to store my nail stamping plates for quite some time now. My collection is getting larger and it was really annoying not having a quick and easy way to choose what design I want while trying not to ruin my freshly polished nails! I saw this great storage option by Susie but I couldn't find anything like this at all in Sydney. Her way of storing plates is perfect because it's small and compact. I went to Kings Comics, Games Paradise, The Collectibles Fair in Parramatta, dollar shops.. nothing like the one she uses. All I seemed to find were the A4 cardholders that hold 9 cards and I didn't want that. I finally found my perfect nail plate storage solutions at Office works and a dollar store.

Photobucket

It's a 4 to a page card holder and I can flip through my Konad, fauxnad and Bundle Monster plates like a menu, it's great!

Next are the essentials I use for every manicure:
Photobucket

I use Swisspers make-up pads to remove my nail polish which I cut in half and then store in an old Ferrero Rocher container along with cotton buds =p I like to reuse and recycle ok! I'm always in a rush so I use my trusty Manicare polish dryer (love this thing!!). I store my manicure essentials like topcoat, basecoat, Seche Prep, Seche Soft, Konad double sided stamper and plastic scraper, crystal nail file, tweezers, cuticle stick and my fave nail polish corrector in a plastic lipstick holder I found in a dollar store.

And lastly my nail polish removers which I use:
Photobucket

Nailene Artificial Nail & Polish Remover for removing glitter polishes (works fantastic and I'll have to do a review soon), Manicare polish remover, Konad One Touch remover and little travel size bottle of polish remover I got in my swap with Anita.

I hope that helped you a little Nur =)

Thanks for looking! Don't forget to enter my 200 followers giveaway here!

  1. wow! you have so many nail polishes! I really want to try OPI and Zoya and Essie. I haven't tried any of those yet. Sad, right?

  2. O_O nice collection and storage!
you are super organized and tidy! Really like that :)!

That nailene stuff sounds interesting wonder if that available online or around the world. Glitter in polishes or make up is a pain to remove T__T

  3. What a great storage setup :)
I have these tall storage drawers that i got from the reject shop. Not large enough but hold all my bits and bobs for nail art and nail files and stuff.

I will look into the ones at kmart though, for $6 they are a good storgae size.

    Thanks for sharing

  8. I like to say i'm a nail polish collector instead of addict =) hehe.

I you're so neat and tidy with your polish. I am still trying to figure out to where to keep all my polishes. in my room? washroom? downnstairs? argh. I do my nails everywhere I don't have one particular table where I do my nails. =(

I was going to ask you, as a RN how do you prevent your nails from chipping? or do you have to change your polish everyday? you must wash your hands and wear gloves a lot yes? I change my gloves a lot at work and my nails seem to always chip.

  11. Thanks for that post! I really enjoy reading about other's nail polish storages ^^
The lipstick-container-turned-nails-essential holder is such a good idea too!

The manicare dryer is so cute! Before I read your comment I thought it was an air freshener haha~ =_=; I often smudge my polish as I'm impatient so I must hunt this dryer down! :)

  12. Wow, you have everything organised perfectly. All my nail stuff is in boxes that are just flying around the house. I need to find a space for them. I have a helmer in my other house but I don't know where to put it if I bring it here T_T

  17. @Popcorn: I don't think it's sad at all, there's always a 1st time for everything! Sure I'd love to do a makeup collection post for you =) I'll hopefully do it in the next few weeks!

@Puranki: I am a bit OCD and I have to have things organised just so! It really annoys me and I don't rest until I've found the perfect solution =p

@Bev: The storage drawers from the reject shop sound interesting. Definitely try the Homemaker ones from Kmart. I searched high and low for the perfect polish storage box EVERYWHERE - Bunnings, Target, dollar stores, Ikea etc.. I'm very picky and I think these are fantastic.

I forget to give the dimensions which I'll add into the post but it's the 7litre container which is 33cm(w) x 22.5cm (d) x 15cm(h).

  18. @PetiteLittleGirl: Thanks hun =) And I still want more polishes how bad is that lol.

@ipehishere: Sorry to make you envious! =p

@Nikki: Glad you like it Nikki =) I can't stand when things in my room aren't neat and tidy, I have to find the perfect storage solutions otherwise it bugs me to no end!

@Alice: Sorry to make you jealous Alice! It's not much compared to the hardcore nail bloggers who have 400+ bottles though hehe. But I still want so many polishes, it's so bad!

    ReplyDelete
  19. @shortnails: That's a nice spin on it! I'll use it I think =p I keep my polishes in my room because I like to have them close by and because I do my nails at my desk.

To prevent chipping, make sure to use a good basecoat and topcoat. I use Seche Clear as base and alternate between Nailene Acrylic Strong and Seche Vite for topcoat depending on my time limitations for my mani. I also like to make sure my coats of polish are dry before I apply the next layer but really I think it depends on the polish and what you do with your hands. Sometimes I get no chips and sometimes it chips straight away!

I work in an outpatient service currently that doesn't require much use of gloves at all as my work is mainly office based. The clinical duties don't really require actually touching the patients. When I used to work on the wards though I never wore nail polish as it was very frowned upon!

    I hope that helps =)

  20. @Krissy: Thanks Krissy! I have to have things neat and tidy otherwise it drives me crazy haha. I used to keep my plates in the plastic it came in but it annoyed me so much! The brand of the card holder is Marbig and cost me less than $10 (from memory) from Officeworks =)

@Kaitlyn: Manicare is an Australian brand so I don't think you'll be able to find it in the States unfortunately =( I just purchased it from my a local beauty shop/pharmacy here in Aus called Priceline.

@Donna: No worries, I love seeing other people's nail polish storage too =) The lipstick holder is great as I just grab it and the bottle of polish I need and go!

Lol it does look like an air freshener now that you mention it! Definitely get one, I'm soooo impatient with my manis and it just helps speed things up. Some people say a nail dryer bubbles their manis but I've never had ANY problems with mine.

@Cel: It's not EXACTLY the way I want it just yet but it's close enough =) Before I got the boxes everything was just lying around too, it frustrated me very much. Oh I wish I had a helmer! They look awesome but I'd probably have to buy more polish to fill up all the drawers haha.

  21. @yokeMun: Thanks! I'm probably more OCD than just organised haha.

    @amusedPolish: Glad you like it!

    @PaO*: Thank you!

@The Little Dust Princess: Oh I'd love to have that in my room! But I don't think my family would appreciate me nailing things into the wall haha. Plus I'm lazy to dust =p
